“Women-only” public areas are becoming increasingly popular in response to sexual harassment complaints. In the capital of Hubei province, China, female platforms are planned for the new subway line, complete with mother-and-baby feeding rooms and library book vending machines. In Mexico City, female-only buses have been in operation for a while due to daily reports of harassment on public transport.

Whilst this clearly doesn’t solve the underlying issue of respect for women, it does provide a band-aid solution. As certain female populations become increasingly empowered within cultures where regressive attitudes towards women still exist, could the segregation of sexes become a commonplace trend?
